After medical training at the Royal London Hospital, Dr Tanner began his career as a GP. His interest in sports medicine and musculoskeletal disorders led him to qualify further and he is now an authority in these areas. He has been awarded a Fellowship of the Faculty of Sports and Exercise Medicine in the UK and Ireland.

Dr Tanner teaches and lectures both nationally and internationally and is a member of the International Academy of Manual and Musculoskeletal Medicine. He is also an instructor for the Spine Intervention Society which instructs other specialists in minimal intervention techniques for the spine. He is Past President of the British Institute of Musculoskeletal Medicine for whom he was course organiser and tutor for postgraduate education for 10 years. He teaches diagnostic ultrasound at AECC Bournemouth University MSc programme.

He has written three books on back pain; ‘Better Back’, published by Dorling Kindersley, ‘Your guide to Back Pain by Hodder Arnold, the BMA guide to Back Care by DK. He also writes for textbooks in Musculoskeletal medicine and training manuals. He is an adviser to the Education committee of the British Association of Sports and Exercise Medicine.

He is currently engaged in a clinical research study on prolotherapy for sacroiliac dysfunction in the NHS.

Dr Tanner’s memberships include the British Pain Society, BMA, SIS, Faculty of Sports and Exercise Medicine.
