Arthrosamid Injections: A New Treatment for Knee Osteoarthritis Relief

Arthrosamid knee injection

Knee osteoarthritis affects millions of people in the UK, often making everyday activities like walking, climbing stairs, or enjoying hobbies feel more challenging. Treatments available through the NHS such as painkillers, physiotherapy or steroid injections, can help, but they’re not always suitable for everyone, may involve long waiting times and often only provide short-term relief.

Arthrosamid® is a newer treatment now available at The Oving Clinic, providing a longer-lasting, non-surgical option for managing knee osteoarthritis.

Arthrosamid injections are provided by Dr Pete Morgan, following a thorough clinical assessment to make sure it’s the right choice for you.

What is Arthrosamid?

Arthrosamid is a non-biodegradable hydrogel injection developed to treat knee osteoarthritis. Unlike steroid or hyaluronic acid injections, which break down and often need repeating, Arthrosamid works by creating a soft, cushioning layer within the knee joint that stays in place.

This cushioning effect reduces friction and inflammation, helping to ease stiffness and pain. Clinical studies have shown improvements that can last 12 months or longer from a single injection!

How Does it Differ from Other Injections?

If you’ve had treatment for knee pain before, you may already be familiar with options such as:

  • Steroid injections - Helpful for short-term inflammation but effects can wear off after a few weeks or months.
  • Hyaluronic acid (HA) injections - Sometimes called "lubricant" injections. These can improve joint movement, but the effect is temporary as the gel breaks down.

Arthrosamid is different. Because the hydrogel doesn’t degrade, this knee injection continues to cushion the joint over time. For patients who are not yet ready for knee replacement surgery, or who want a longer-term solution than standard injections, this can make a big difference.

The Procedure

At The Oving Clinic, Arthrosamid injections are carried out as an outpatient procedure. Dr Pete Morgan uses ultrasound guidance to make sure the hydrogel is delivered precisely into the knee joint.

The injection itself is quick, minimally invasive and usually very well tolerated. Most people can walk out of the clinic and return to everyday activities within a day or two, with little to no downtime. Some mild swelling or discomfort may occur, but this usually settles quickly.

Who Might Benefit?

Arthrosamid may be suitable if you:

  • Have mild to moderate knee osteoarthritis.
  • Have tried other treatments (such as physiotherapy, pain relief or standard injections) without long-lasting benefit.
  • Are not ready for, or wish to delay, knee replacement surgery.
  • Want a safe, effective treatment without a lengthy waiting list.

Every patient is different, so a consultation and clinical assessment with Dr Morgan is essential before treatment.

Results You Can Expect

Most patients begin to notice improvements within 4–6 weeks. Benefits can include:

  • Long-term pain relief (often lasting 12 months or more).
  • Reduced stiffness and improved movement.
  • Minimal downtime - most patients return to normal routines within days.
  • A safe alternative to repeated steroid injections or early surgery.
